What Georgetown does to paint
Georgetown sits at 8,530 feet in a tight canyon on Clear Creek. The canyon walls take the sun early and late, so most of the day's ultraviolet lands on south walls at midday, and the creek keeps the low side of town damp.
The homes
A silver-mining town that is a National Historic Landmark District: 1870s and 80s wood-frame houses with lap siding, ornate trim and many layers of old paint, plus cabins up the canyon and in Silver Plume.
How we work there
Historic exteriors are mostly hand work: scraping, sanding, priming bare wood and brushing the trim. We take Georgetown jobs big enough for the drive, usually whole exteriors, and plan them in one block.

What's included
The mountain is hard on paint.
A coat that lasts twelve years in Denver can go in four up here. The difference is almost never the paint. It is the prep under it.
- Ultraviolet
- About a third stronger at 9,000 feet than at sea level. It chalks and fades a coat that would last years down the hill.
- Freeze and thaw
- Most nights from October to May. Water gets behind paint that was put over unprimed wood and lifts it off by spring.
- The season
- Exterior work needs nights above about 40 degrees, so the window is short. We book it early and prep in the shoulder weeks.

Do you paint historic houses in Georgetown?
Yes. The prep is most of the job on an 1880s house, and the written price says exactly how much of it there is before we start.
